The opposition is nervous as the Supreme Court rules today on the ADC, LP, and PDP crises.

Ahead of the 2027 general elections, Nigeria is awaiting a significant decision from the Supreme Court over the leadership disputes plaguing the country’s major opposition parties.

According to Naija News, rulings on issues involving the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Labour Party (LP), and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are anticipated from the Supreme Court.

Citing deadlines established by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Supreme Court last week approved an expedited hearing procedure.

Issues of legitimate leadership, party control, and adherence to constitutional procedures—factors essential to each party’s capacity to call congresses, hold primaries, and submit candidates—are at the core of the cases.

Governorship and state assembly elections are set for February 6, 2027, whereas INEC has previously set January 16, 2027, for the presidential and national assembly elections.

The court’s ruling is crucial to political parties’ plans because primaries are anticipated to take place between April 23 and May 30, 2026.

Within the PDP, factions are fighting for control of party institutions, with the national secretaryship contest and issues of leadership legitimacy at the center of the conflict.

Internal leadership and executive recognition are at the center of the ADC’s crisis, which may have an impact on its viability as a coalition platform.

Naija News is aware that the court’s decision would have significant ramifications and that parties would need backup plans in the event of unfavorable outcomes.

Parties may act swiftly to settle disputes and schedule primaries within the allotted time if the court maintains the current leadership.

Unresolved complaints, however, may still lead to defections and erode internal unity.

Parties may be forced into emergency reorganization, including the creation of caretaker committees and the holding of new conventions on short notice, if a ruling modifies the current leadership structures.

Beyond the legal dispute, political players are already considering other tactics, such as forming coalitions and potential defections.

According to reports, Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rauf Aregbesola, and Rotimi Amaechi are among the prominent opposition personalities engaged in attempts to combine.

In the event that the court’s ruling does not favor important opposition factions, some stakeholders are discreetly arranging backup plans.
