Before the upcoming governorship election, Kelmi Lazarus, a former Social Democratic Party (SDP) candidate in Gombe State, moved to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
According to Naija News, Lazarus also endorsed Prof. Isa Ali Pantami, the PDP’s nominee for governor, calling him the best choice to head the state.
Following what he characterized as thorough discussions with his political allies and supporters, the former SDP candidate made his choice public in a statement on Wednesday.
Lazarus ran for governor of Gombe State in 2023 with the SDP platform. In addition, he had been Radio Gombe’s general manager and the party’s state chairman.
Lazarus explained his decision to join the PDP by saying he thoroughly weighed his political options.
“After careful thought and consultation with my supporters, I joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP),” he declared.
He claims that his decision was influenced by his faith in Pantami’s ability to lead effectively and with a focus on development.
“My decision is based on my conviction that Professor Isa Ali Pantami possesses the vision, competence, integrity, and leadership capacity required to provide purposeful governance and advance the development of Gombe State,” Lazarus continued.
Lazarus Supports Pantami
Pantami is the strongest contender in the race, according to the former governorship candidate, who asked his supporters to help the PDP win.
“Professor Pantami is the most qualified candidate in this race,” he declared.
“For the advancement and prosperity of the state, I thus urge my supporters and the decent people of Gombe State to unite behind the PDP.”
According to Lazarus, backing Pantami would benefit Gombe State’s citizens who want better development and governance.
The PDP’s Gombe State chapter responded by characterizing Lazarus’ defection as a major increase in the party’s base of support.
The trend, according to the party, showed that political leaders and other interested parties were becoming more confident in Pantami’s candidacy and the PDP’s state agenda.
It assured Lazarus and his supporters that they would have equal access to party events and welcomed them into the fold.
All new and current members will be able to contribute to the PDP’s goal of creating “a more united, peaceful and prosperous Gombe State,” according to the party.
