Ahead of the 2027 general elections, Yakubu Dogara, a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, has stated that leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) cannot be taken seriously unless they offer distinct alternatives to the reforms being carried out by the Federal Government.
Dogara, a prominent member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), claimed that the opposition party has yet to present a people-centered vision that sets it apart from President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Talking about Sunday Politics on Channels The former speaker stated on television that the ADC’s public discourse has mostly been motivated by rage rather than ideas.
“I haven’t heard the conversation about people. Anger over one or two things is all I hear. What concept or vision are they supporting? “I haven’t seen that yet,” Dogara remarked.
He emphasized that Nigerians expect concrete policy choices and stressed that criticism alone would not be sufficient.
“We cannot take them seriously until they present alternatives to what the President is doing, and we examine them critically and determine that they are superior to what we have.” Without that, everyone knows it’s just gimmicks that won’t get them anywhere,” he stated.
Ahead to the 2027 elections, an opposition group selected the ADC as its platform in July 2025. Prominent politicians like former vice president Atiku Abubakar, former presidential contender Peter Obi, former ministers Rotimi Amaechi and Rauf Aregbesola, former governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State, and former Senate President David Mark are also part of the coalition.
Citing the nation’s growing poverty and economic difficulties, the ADC has pledged to defeat the APC in the upcoming election.
Dogara, however, brushed off what he called hyperbolic accusations and urged opposition leaders to stop complaining.
“I hear that kind of talk,” he remarked.
The former legislator also urged Nigerians to be patient with the Tinubu administration’s continuing reforms, especially those pertaining to the economy and security.
“Even if people don’t feel it, I believe we are headed in the right direction. He stated, “It has taken us how many years to reach the point where President Tinubu took over when we talk about the security challenges.”
Dogara pointed out that no government could suddenly solve long-standing issues, but the current administration has demonstrated leadership in areas that were previously disregarded.
“No one has a magic wand that can make everything vanish overnight. However, we have seeing leadership in hitherto ignored sectors since he took office,” he stated.
