The United States warns Nigerian citizens to stay in their homes today.

Due to growing tension in the continuing US/Israel-Iran confrontation, the US Embassy in Nigeria has sent out a security advisory to American citizens, alerting them to the possibility of a protest in the country’s capital, Abuja, today.

The US cautioned that there is “a high potential for protests in Abuja today” and asked people to be extremely cautious in a message shared on 𝕏 on Wednesday.

Concerns about a potential escalation were raised by the mission’s warning that such protests in the past “have resulted in violent clashes between the group and Nigerian security forces.”

The embassy “strongly recommends that all U.S. citizens in Abuja remain in their residences on Wednesday, March 4” as a precaution.

Additionally, it cautioned Americans to stay away from protest sites and crowds, be cautious if they were in close proximity to major gatherings, and keep an eye on local media for updates.

Additionally, the advisory advised US citizens to check their personal security preparations, “keep a low profile,” and “be aware of your surroundings.”

Keeping cell phones charged, carrying appropriate identification, remaining vigilant in public areas like shopping malls and places of worship, and changing travel routes and times to lessen predictability are some additional safety precautions mentioned.

The embassy declared that its consulate general in Lagos and its consular office in Abuja are still open in spite of the advise.

It urged people to sign up for the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) in order to get security alerts and to keep an eye on its website for future updates.
