After a shooter murdered at least three people and injured fourteen more at a pub in Austin, Texas, on Sunday, the FBI has launched an investigation into potential terrorism connections. Officials have noted that the perpetrator had clothing with Iranian emblems on it.
During a shootout at the location, police officers shot and killed the gunman. There are still three individuals in critical condition.
Reporters looked at an internal National Counterterrorism Center bulletin that stated the suspect had mental health problems.
According to a law enforcement officer, the shooter was wearing a shirt that featured an Iranian flag with the words “IRAN” written across the front in red, white, and green. Additionally, he had on a sweatshirt that said, “Property of Allah.”
Investigators are looking into whether the recent joint US-Israeli strike on Iran served as motivation for the attack, according to information obtained by Naija News.
According to the Counterterrorism Center’s report, authorities identified the shooter as Ndiaga Diagne, a naturalized US citizen who was originally from Senegal.
The FBI’s San Antonio field office’s acting special agent in charge, Alex Doran, informed reporters on Sunday that investigators discovered alarming signs.
Doran stated, “There were indicators on the subject and in his vehicle that indicate a potential nexus to terrorism.”
The Federal Task Force Leads the Investigation Team
The Austin Police Department and the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force have teamed together to look into the shooting. According to Doran, the federal agency sent digital forensic experts and evidence response teams to the scene.
President Donald Trump was briefed on the shooting, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt announced on social media on Sunday.
The incident took place in front of Buford’s, a well-known bar on West 6th Street, which locals in Austin know as the epicenter of the city’s nightlife and music scene.
Prior to the attack, the shooter drove around the block many times in an SUV, Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis informed reporters.
According to Davis, he discharged a pistol at patrons on Buford’s patio and those standing close to the entrance after turning on his hazard lights and lowering his window.
After that, he drove west, got out, and started shooting at onlookers.
According to Davis, the shooter was killed by officers at a nearby crossroads.
Police and emergency personnel were already on the scene, responding to the usual weekend throng. Davis emphasized that this prompt action saved more lives.
According to data from the Gun Violence Archive, which defines a mass shooting as an occurrence in which at least four persons, excluding the gunman, are injured or killed by gunfire, this incident was also the 56th mass shooting in the United States this year and the one with the greatest number of casualties to date.
