Following Chelsea’s 2-1 loss to Arsenal F.C. in Sunday’s Premier League match at the Emirates Stadium, manager Liam Rosenior has tasked his team with eradicating costly defensive and disciplinary errors.
According to Naija News, the Blues had several promising moments and were the more aggressive team for extended periods of time, creating some of the match’s most obvious opportunities. Nevertheless, their efforts were undone by well-known flaws, as they ended the game with 10 men after giving up two corner kicks.
William Saliba and Jurrien Timber, two Arsenal defenders, both scored goals from set pieces as the Gunners won 2-1.
Rosenior was clearly irritated by Chelsea’s incapacity to handle dead-ball situations and acknowledged that the goals they gave up were preventable and detrimental to their goals.
In his post-match analysis on the Premier League website, Rosenior stated, “I think it’s clear where our strengths are and what we need to improve on.”
“We lost the game because we gave up two goals due to set-plays, and receiving another red card is really disappointing.”
“There is a lot of good [in our play], but I don’t want to be sitting here talking about how well we’ve played every week without picking up points.”
The North London team has now scored 16 goals from dead-ball situations, which is joint-highest in the league this season. This has been a defining aspect of Arsenal’s campaign.
The match also brought to light Chelsea’s escalating disciplinary problems after winger Pedro Neto was fired after receiving two consecutive yellow cards.
Given that Neto had been one of Chelsea’s most promising players before to his departure, Rosenior called the send-off a significant setback.
Pedro is disappointed because you want him on the field since he is an extremely talented player. He was actually giving Arsenal trouble up to that point, he claimed.
“We will miss him against Aston Villa F.C., and it’s not just today that will frustrate us.”
With Neto’s departure on Sunday, Chelsea has now received seven red cards in the Premier League this season, a concerning number that highlights their issues with discipline. According to rumors, when cup matches are taken into account, the total number across all tournaments may reach nine.
“We Need to Accept Responsibility”
Rosenior acknowledged Arsenal’s set-piece prowess but emphasized that his team needed to examine their own weaknesses.
But Pedro isn’t the only one. We need to be more accountable as a group and as the leader for some of the discipline-related decisions we make,” he stated.
“And some of the goals we’re giving up are unacceptable at this level, not just today.”
The recent wave of red cards, he continued, indicates more serious problems inside the team.
It’s a matter of concentration and focus that we must master. We had ten games before I took over that were free of these problems, but now that we’ve had two [red cards in two games], we need to find out what’s going on.
The problem is that, in my opinion, if we can resolve those two primary issues, we can work as an extremely effective team and accomplish all of our goals,” Rosenior emphasized.
Rosenior insisted there were positive aspects to the team’s overall performance despite the loss. He did, however, stress that as Chelsea looks to move up the Premier League standings, elegance alone will not be enough.
