After head coach Walid Regragui left the Morocco national football team, transfer analyst Fabrizio Romano denied rumors that Andrés Iniesta had already consented to take over as technical director.
Regragui abruptly ended his tenure with the Atlas Lions on Thursday when he resigned from his position. Only six weeks had passed since Morocco’s home loss to the Senegal national football team in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final.
Reports that Iniesta had already signed a deal to assume a key technical role within the Moroccan setup started to circulate in the hours that followed.
Romano, however, refuted their assertions. The transfer insider stated in a Friday post on 𝕏 that while negotiations may be ongoing, nothing has been finalized.
Romano said 𝕏, “Despite reports, nothing signed or official yet between Andrés Iniesta and Morocco to become the new technical director.”

As they prepare for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, Morocco may be considering a more comprehensive reform of their football system, according to new information from Spanish publication Marca.
According to reports, the plan calls for elevating Iniesta to a position of sporting leadership before pushing for the long-term appointment of Xavi Hernández as coach of the national team.

The addition of João Sacramento, a former assistant at Tottenham Hotspur, AS Roma, and Paris Saint-Germain, has also reinforced the backroom staff.
Since placing fourth in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Morocco has emerged as one of the fastest-rising teams in world football. The federation is moving forward with long-term plans to keep the Atlas Lions competitive on the international scene despite losing the AFCON final.
