Rio Ferdinand, a legend of Manchester United, acknowledged that he did not anticipate Xabi Alonso accepting the Chelsea position, stating that the Spaniard appeared destined not to return to Anfield as a coach.
Alonso has been announced by Chelsea as their next permanent manager on a four-year contract, taking Liam Rosenior’s place at Stamford Bridge, according to Naija News. The hiring puts an end to months of conjecture regarding Alonso’s next step following his January departure from Real Madrid.
Alonso’s close ties to Liverpool has stoked speculation about a potential return to Merseyside. The former midfield player played in 210 games for the Reds and contributed to their historic 2005 Champions League victory in Istanbul. With concerns about Arne Slot’s future, many thought Alonso would wait for the Liverpool position to become available.
Ferdinand said that the move took him off surprise in an interview with Rio Ferdinand Presents via Metro UK.
“I’m truly shocked that he has adopted that stance. He added, “I’m not saying he’s the wrong pick.
“I think he would have been patient enough to see how the Arne Slot situation at Liverpool would unfold, which is why I’m surprised by his decision.”
According to Ferdinand, Alonso’s enduring love for Liverpool made the choice even more surprising.
He remarked, “As an ex-Liverpool player, he cherished the club, always speaks positively about it, and one would think that was a relationship poised to develop behind the scenes.”
“Given the current situation and developments at Liverpool, he would undoubtedly be the next in line for that position if he had just been patient.”
