Emerse Fae Calls Schweinsteiger’s Ivory Coast Remarks “Racist”

Before their World Cup match, former Germany player Bastian Schweinsteiger described his team’s style of play as “wild” and without tactical discipline. Ivory Coast manager Emerse Fae has accused Schweinsteiger of using remarks that could be construed as racist.

After Ivory Coast defeated Curacao 2-0 in Philadelphia on Thursday to earn a spot in the 2026 World Cup knockout stage for the first time in the nation’s history, Fae spoke out. Despite an earlier loss to Germany, the outcome guaranteed second place in Group E.

Schweinsteiger told German television ARD prior to Germany’s 2-1 victory over Ivory Coast on June 20 that the Ivorians were “a bit unorthodox, a bit wild, a bit perhaps also not so conditioned by tactics” and played “a bit African football.” We have to be ready for it to be unpredictable.

Following his team’s qualifying, Fae responded forcefully to the comments, which were criticized in Germany.

Fae remarked, “I think it’s sad.”

“Schweinsteiger was an excellent player; I’ve always admired his midfield skills and game philosophy. I felt let down by the man after hearing his remarks.

It’s strange that he would say that. If we were calling a spade a spade, we could label it racist.

“I disagree with him, but I have no choice except to accept the situation as it is. All I can demonstrate is that African teams are technical and tactical on the field in addition to being physically strong.

“I can only hope it’s an awkward statement rather than anything he’s thinking about. He is free to think that way if that is what he believes.

While maintaining that African football should no longer be evaluated using antiquated preconceptions, Fae also speculated that the former Germany international might have been attempting to spark controversy by making divisive comments.

In German football circles, the matter has already generated debate. When asked during the competition in New York, former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp declined to comment.

You want to continue the conversation now. I have no chance, no, no. I am unable to respond to your query. You put me in this predicament because everyone enjoys it. It’s not my duty to make everyone enjoy it, but this is a serious topic, and I’m not even sure what to say,” he remarked.

“It’s one thing for African people, it’s another for others, and I’m not here.”

After defeating Ecuador and Curacao, Ivory Coast advanced to the round of 32. On June 30, they will play either France or Norway in Arlington, Texas.
