If Fela weren’t Seun Kuti, the son of Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, he wouldn’t be so great.

Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti, who is nominated for a Grammy, attributes his father Fela Kuti’s success to his illustrious family.

According to Kuti, Fela would not have been legendary without the benefits of being from a well-known family.

According to Naija News, the artist made the claim in an Ada’s Room interview.

According to Seun, Fela’s upbringing as the son of well-known nationalist and women’s rights campaigner Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti gave him exposure and opportunities that greatly aided in his ascent.

According to Kuti, Fela’s success was a result of both his talent and the conditions that allowed him to flourish.

Nothing in life originates from nothing. Without being the son of Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, even my father, Fela, would not be as wonderful as he is. Fela would not exist if Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti had not given birth to her. He remarked, “You would never have heard about him.”

Seun emphasized that hard effort remained important to his family’s values while acknowledging the significance of privilege. He insisted that background alone did not ensure success.

Thus, nothing originates from nothing. One benefit of my family, though, is that you have to work. He continued, “There are no shortcuts to it.”

The musician also addressed the topic of nepotism, stating that while his family name could lead to opportunities, it does not relieve the responsibility to produce and live up to expectations.

“I may be a Nepo baby, but my dad isn’t touring with me, composing my songs, or performing on stage with my sax. My father’s name would undoubtedly open doors for me, but you are under pressure to live up to his standards as soon as you walk in.

People expect you to be excellent because you come from a great family. No one in the business sector wants to invest in you as an artist or be patient with you while you develop. They simply think you’re fantastic, which puts a lot of pressure on you,” he said.
