The Senate is said by the SDP to be impeding election reforms.

The Senate is allegedly resisting real-time electronic results transmission and weakening electoral reforms, according to the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

Its National Publicity Secretary, Araba Aiyenigba, made this announcement in an Abuja statement on Friday.

Aiyenigba pointed out that during the senate’s 2025 countrywide public hearings on the proposed Electoral Act Repeal and Enactment Bill, voters requested reliable elections.

He claims that in order to ensure transparency, minimize errors, and stop manipulation during result collation, technologies like BVAS and the INEC Result Viewing (IReV) platform are crucial.

Aiyenigba added that there was growing national agreement on bolstering democratic electoral procedures and that many senators, citizens, and INEC leadership backed the reforms to advance integrity, transparency, and legitimacy.

He insisted that the proposed Electoral Act give legal support for real-time electronic transmission and urged the Senate leadership to refrain from undermining democracy.

The SDP spokesperson urged lawmakers to remove the obstacles preventing the nation’s electoral administration from operating effectively, arguing that INEC has the necessary infrastructure, technical know-how, and dedication to transmit election results online.

“The country cannot afford to lose credibility in the general elections in 2027.

In order to prevent Nigeria and our democracy from regressing in this new era, he stated that all hands must be on deck.

The party warned that Nigeria could not afford another election-related credibility crisis and urged voters, civil society organizations, and stakeholders to stay alert and unified.
