Mudashiru Obasa, the speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has reportedly decided to run for the Agege Federal Constituency seat in the House of Representatives before to the 2027 general elections, abandoning his previous goal of becoming governor.
According to information obtained by Naija News, Obasa, who had hopes of succeeding Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, revived the Mandate Group, a former political organization connected to President Bola Tinubu, in order to intensify statewide political talks.
But after President Bola Tinubu reportedly decided on Lagos Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat as the favored candidate for governorship after consulting with the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), Obasa took a clear turn.
Sources in the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos told Vanguard that Obasa was forced by the recent events to turn his attention back to the Lagos West Senatorial District, where he intends to run against Senator Idiat Adebule, the current senator and former deputy governor.
However, the national leadership of the APC and its women’s branch opposed the proposal and put up persistent pressure to keep Adebule in office.
According to the APC source, party members contended that Adebule’s “candidacy is critical to gender representation in the National Assembly” because she is still the sole female senator from the South-West geopolitical zone.
“His interest gained traction amid internal party considerations to field the Speaker as the APC’s senatorial candidate for the district,” the source revealed.
It was also reported that President Tinubu expressed his opinion on the matter and suggested that Obasa seek a position in the House of Representatives.
“He was specifically directed to contest for the Agege Federal Constituency currently represented by first-term lawmaker Dr. Wale Ahmed,” according to another APC insider.
Obasa has subsequently “begun quiet mobilization efforts within Agege, rallying grassroots support for his new political objective,” according to the source, aside from the last-minute adjustment.
