ALGON Suspends Three Chairmen and Supports Tinubu’s Reelection

Before the general elections in 2027, President Bola Tinubu has received the support of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) for a second term.

The endorsement was included in the resolutions adopted at the association’s 54th Expanded National Executive Council meeting, which took place in Abuja, according to Naija News.

Members from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, as well as former association leaders, attended the meeting, which was presided over by ALGON National President Bello Lawal.

Former ALGON President Alabi Kolade David made the motion for Tinubu’s endorsement, and Plateau State ALGON Chairman Anani Hamisu Mohammed seconded it.

Mohammed stated in a statement released following the Sunday meeting that the association thought consistency under the Tinubu administration would improve grassroots governance.

He claimed that a second term for the president would strengthen current changes and “deepen grassroots governance.”

Additionally, ALGON reiterated its backing for the Tinubu government.

The group stated that the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which it claimed had increased local government autonomy and fiscal capacity, was the basis for its decision.

According to ALGON, the current administration’s policies have improved councils’ ability to carry out their constitutional duties and provide communities with development.

Stronger local governments would enhance service delivery, strengthen democracy, and bring governance closer to the people, it continued.

In the meantime, three local government chairmen were suspended by the council due to alleged misbehavior.

Zakari Iliyasu, Chairman of Agwara Local Government Area and ALGON Chairman in Niger State; Abubakar Danladi Abdullahi, Chairman of Kaiama Local Government Area and ALGON Chairman in Kwara State; and Abba Shehu Tambuwal, Chairman of Tambuwal Local Government Council and ALGON Chairman in Sokoto State, are among those suspended.

According to ALGON, the three officials were suspended for allegedly abusing constitutional provisions, acting against the association’s interests, and impersonating.

The group cautioned state governments, development partners, ministries, departments, and agencies not to interact with the suspended officials.

It stated that the impacted chairmen were no longer able to represent ALGON in any way.

Any interaction with them as ALGON representatives will not be acknowledged, the association further stated.

Bello Lawal, the national president of ALGON, also received a vote of confidence.

Members reaffirmed their commitment to the association’s stability and unity while pledging allegiance to his leadership.

The council declared that it would keep supporting measures that improve local government management and encourage grassroots growth.
