US Lawmaker: Take Tough Measures To Protect Christians In Nigeria’s Middle Belt To Trump

Following further killings in Plateau State, US senator Riley Moore has called on US President Donald Trump to act decisively to protect Christians.

In response to reports and footage from Barkin Ladi Local Government Area in Plateau State, where gunmen attacked mourners at a mass funeral on Wednesday, Moore issued the plea in a statement on Thursday.

According to Naija News, the attackers allegedly opened fire on locals gathered to bury seven people who had been killed earlier in the neighborhood, resulting in several suspected deaths and numerous injuries.

In a statement, Moore compared Nigeria’s military intervention in the neighboring Benin Republic during a coup attempt with what he called the government’s inability to put an end to killings in certain areas of Plateau State.

“When I visited Nigeria, the government responded swiftly to quell a coup in Benin,” he remarked, alluding to Nigeria’s deployment of troops and fighter jets in December 2025 to assist the Beninese government in fending off a coup attempt.

“These absolutely horrific scenes unfolding in Plateau State are all the more unconscionable because Nigeria is willing to intervene to stop a violent attack in another country while they watch as their own Christian citizens are brutalized,” Moore said.

He said that radical Islamic terrorists “viciously murdered Christians who gathered for a mass burial,” and that despite warnings of upcoming attacks, the Nigerian government had done nothing.

“The Nigerian government could put an end to terrorism and prevent its own citizens from becoming martyrs.” However, they are nowhere to be seen when Christians are killed for their religion, much like lambs being taken to slaughter, despite early warnings of coming attacks. “Enough is enough,” he continued.

“Now, I am asking the Trump Administration to take forceful action to defend our innocent brothers and sisters in Christ in the Middle Belt of Nigeria, the epicentre of an ongoing Christian genocide,” Moore continued, expressing his encouragement that the Trump administration had included the protection of Christians in Nigeria in its counterterrorism strategy.
