Deji Adeyanju, a Nigerian lawyer and human rights campaigner, has made fun of Nasir El-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna State, over his encounter with security guards at Abuja Airport.
When El-Rufai returned from Cairo, Egypt, security personnel tried to arrest him at the Abuja International Airport, according to Naija News.
Instead of being taken into custody, the former governor insisted on receiving an official invitation letter from the security personnel.
“My lawyers have issued a statement that condemns the illegal attempt to arrest me today at the Abuja airport upon my arrival from Cairo,” El-Rufai wrote in a post via his 𝕏 following the event.
“Excessive executive power and willful disregard for the rule of law must be outgrown by our nation.”
El-Rufai, who persecuted individuals while in power, is wailing and pleading for the rule of law, Adeyanju said in response to the tweet.
“El-Rufai, who oppressed everyone yesterday, is crying and pleading for the rule of law,” he wrote on 𝕏. I’m grateful for this, Karma.
Adeyanju has also urged the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to look into El-Rufai.
In a statement released on Thursday, Adeyanju raised worries about the handling of insecurity under El-Rufai’s leadership and mentioned claims of corruption.
While pointing out that his administration was widely accused for stifling dissenting opinions, he questioned El-Rufai’s assertion of political persecution.
Adeyanju insisted that responsibility be extended to all public officials, past and present, and encouraged the intelligence service and the anti-corruption agency to operate independently and fairly.
He also requested that the DSS look into alleged controversial security measures connected to El-Rufai’s government, such as claims that violent organizations received financial inducements.
