A concerted attack on a Forward Operating Base in Gajigana, Nganzai Local Government Area, Borno State, by alleged Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) members was defeated by Nigerian Army troops.
According to what Naija News has learned, the attempted attack on Saturday night was successfully thwarted when soldiers engaged the terrorists in a ferocious gunfight, forcing them to flee with significant fatalities.
The attack started at around 7:20 p.m., according to security sources who spoke to Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency journal, when a big group of suspected ISWAP members moved closer to the military base.
In what appeared to be a planned operation, another set of terrorists approached the base on foot, while the terrorists were apparently supported by two gun trucks and riding many motorcycles.
The sources claim that soldiers from the 212 Battalion saw the assailants’ movements before they arrived at the base and opened fire right away.
According to the sources, “the troops detected the advancing terrorists early and immediately engaged them with overwhelming firepower, frustrating the assault and forcing the attackers to retreat in disarray.”
According to the report, soon after the first gunfight, a reinforcement unit under the command of the 212 Battalion arrived to bolster the forces’ position and guarantee the region remained safe.
The extra forces kept the militants from regrouping for another attack and helped stabilize the situation.
The terrorists incurred heavy casualties during the abortive attempt, according to security sources.
According to reports, some of the attackers were slain, while others left the scene carrying their fallen coworkers’ bodies.
According to the sources, “the terrorists suffered heavy casualties during the failed assault, with several bodies reportedly dragged away by their fleeing comrades.”
Two soldiers were shot during the confrontation, even though they were able to repel the attack.
Before being transported to the 7 Division Medical Services and Hospital for additional care, the injured staff members received first assistance on the spot.
During the firefight, military equipment also suffered minor damage.
According to the report, pieces from a rocket-propelled grenade launched by the terrorists damaged the body of a gun vehicle and four of its tires.
