A three-story structure that some Federal Polytechnic Oko students in Anambra State use as a private dorm has fallen.
According to reports, the structure, which is situated in Amokpala, Oko, in the Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State, fell on Sunday night.
Reports from the scene of the disaster indicate that an unknown number of inhabitants are trapped under the debris.
The structure, known as Elite Five Star Lodge, is situated in the Oko Polytechnic neighborhood next to Tonimas Filling Station, according to Naija News.
Rescue operations had begun at the time this report was filed, and officials from the Anambra State Police Command, the Anambra State Fire Service, the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), and other security and emergency agencies had been sent to the scene.
Cries for assistance are apparently still being heard from beneath the debris, despite the fact that several injured people have so far been rescued from the collapsed structure and transported to an Oko hospital for medical attention.
Anambra State Police Command spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed the incident and said a police-led joint security team quickly secured the area and coordinated emergency response measures to stop more deaths.
In order to provide rescue personnel free access to conduct their activities, Ikenga asked locals to maintain composure, avoid disseminating unconfirmed information, and avoid the area.
As more confirmed information becomes available, he continued, the police headquarters will send additional updates.
Since rescue efforts were still in progress at the time this article was filed, it was not possible to establish the precise number of casualties and people trapped.
