The average price of 50 kg of local rice (short grains) increased by 20.5 percent in March 2026 to N112,000 from N92,946 in February 2026, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
In its March 2026 Selected Food Price Watch report, NBS revealed this information yesterday.
In light of recent price hikes, Vanguard’s latest research revealed that the average cost of 50 kg of local rice short grain is N60,000.
The price of 50 kg of foreign rice increased by 3.06 percent to N133,975 in March from N110,589 in February, according to the NBS report.
NBS observed that during the evaluation period, the prices of a few chosen food items also increased.
According to the March 2026 Selected Food Price Watch report, the average monthly cost of eggs (a crate of thirty pieces) rose by 2.0 percent from February 2026. In March 2026, the average cost of a kilogram of brown beans was N1,325.85. From N1,307.44 in February 2026, this item climbed by 1.41 percent.
In comparison to February 2026, the average price of Garri white sold loose (1 kg) increased by 1.38 percent to N801.54 in March 2026. Similarly, from February 2026 to March 2026, the average price of one kilogram of onion bulb increased by 1.59 percent to N1,153.14.
“The average cost of one kilogram of fresh ginger was N5,541.25, a monthly increase of 0.61 percent.”
According to the Bureau, Niger State had the lowest average price for eggs (a crate of thirty pieces) at N5,610.04 in March 2026, while Taraba State recorded the highest average price at N6,999.
Oyo State had the highest average price for brown beans (1 kg) at N1,937.20, while Taraba State had the lowest at N745. Abia State had the highest average price for Garri white (1 kg) at N1,075.45, while Plateau State had the lowest at N513.78.
According to NBS, “Kwara State recorded the lowest average price at N829.9, while Abia State recorded the highest average price of onion bulb (1kg) at N2,115.67.”
