In Enugu, police break up a trafficking network and save a 20-year-old

The Enugu State Police Command has arrested Ibekwe Nkiru, a 50-year-old woman, and rescued a 20-year-old female victim after discovering a suspected international human trafficking operation connected to prostitution.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, made this announcement in a statement on Wednesday night.

The announcement claims that agents from the Igbo-Eze South Police Division made the arrest and rescue on January 16, 2026, after taking “swift action on credible intelligence.”

According to preliminary investigations, the woman, a native of Abia State, was allegedly tricked into leaving her job in Aba after being offered a more lucrative position in Senegal.

According to the authorities, “the promised job later turned out to be related to prostitution.”

The suspect, who works in Enugu’s Amorji-Nike neighborhood, allegedly brought the victim to a shrine in Alor-Agu Community, Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area, Enugu State, at around 7:10 p.m. that same day, according to the police.

“The Divisional Police Officer quickly led a team of operatives to the location after receiving the information at approximately 8:00 p.m., where the suspect was arrested and the victim was rescued,” the statement stated.

While investigations are ongoing to dismantle the entire trafficking network and capture additional people connected to the crime, the police reported that the rescued victim has since been debriefed and reunited with her family.

The State Criminal Investigation Department was instructed by Enugu State Police Commissioner CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa to take over the case and make sure that everyone involved is located, detained, and prosecuted.

The statement said, “He reaffirmed the Command’s unwavering commitment to combating human trafficking, prostitution, and other related crimes.”

In order to help the police prevent and identify crime throughout the state, the police commissioner further urged the people to keep providing timely and reliable information.

Residents were reassured by the command of its commitment to safeguarding vulnerable individuals and prosecuting those who commit human trafficking and related crimes.
