When Real Madrid and Benfica square off in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 play-off first leg tonight, February 17, manager Álvaro Arbeloa has stated that there will be no element of surprise.
Arbeloa stated at his pre-game press conference before the match at the Estádio da Luz that he is fully aware of what to anticipate from Jose Mourinho, who is currently leading the Portuguese powerhouses.
“I know exactly what José [Mourinho] is capable of, so I don’t think he can surprise me,” Arbeloa remarked.
The tactical struggle between two men who are experts in elite European football has been the main focus in the lead-up to the match. Even though Mourinho is known for his careful preparation and big-game pragmatism, Arbeloa seemed composed and assured as he evaluated the situation.
“I knew the intensity Real Madrid would bring to the field, so it doesn’t matter if Benfica showed up with the Youth League team,” he continued.
Champions League champions Real Madrid are used to high-stakes European evenings, and the Spanish coach thinks his team knows what’s expected of them.
There will undoubtedly be more of the same tomorrow. We need to be ready for that,” he added, adding, “I believe they can even play better.”
Real Madrid, meanwhile, has announced their 24-man roster for the journey to Portugal, underscoring Arbeloa’s strength as they aim to gain a favorable outcome before the return leg in Madrid.
Fran González, Andriy Lunin, and Thibaut Courtois were all used in goal. Antonio Rüdiger, Ferland Mendy, Huijsen, Joan Martínez, Dani Carvajal, David Alaba, Trent, Á. Carreras, and Fran García are among the defensive alternatives.
Arda Güler, Dani Ceballos, Cestero, Thiago, Eduardo Camavinga, Federico Valverde, and Aurélien Tchouameni will be responsible for midfield duties. Vinicius Junior, Kylian Mbappé, Gonzalo, Brahim, and Mastantuono round out an offensive lineup that is full of depth and diversity.
The victor of the two-leg match will move on to the actual Round of 16 of the Champions League.
