Top-Performing Nigerian Football Players Abroad: Tanko Shines, Iheanacho Scores Double, and Others

Over the weekend, Nigerian football players stole the show throughout Europe, with Abdullahi Tanko and Kelechi Iheanacho making significant contributions for their teams.

Celtic defeated St Mirren in an eight-goal thriller at Hampden Park thanks to an incredible rally in extra time, securing their spot in the Scottish Cup final.

The Glasgow team crushed the Paisley team with four goals in six minutes after the match was tied at two. The late rush was started by substitute Kelechi Iheanacho, who scored twice with Luke McCowan before Benjamin Nygren sealed the victory.

Iheanacho, who just recently broke a six-month goal drought due to injuries, has made a strong return to form with the victory, which sets up a final against Dunfermline Athletic next month. In 16 games this season across all competitions, the Nigerian currently has six goals.

In a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Viktoria Plzeň in the Czech Republic, FK Pardubice’s lone goal came from Abdullahi Tanko, who scored his sixth goal of the season to move up to ninth place.

Ola Aina participated in the entire game as Nottingham Forest defeated Burnley 4-1 in a thrilling comeback to increase their chances of surviving in the Premier League. With five games left, the win puts Forest five points clear of the relegation zone.

Paul Onuachu, Anthony Nwakaeme, and Chibuike Nwaiwu of Trabzonspor’s Nigerian team began the match in a 1-1 draw with Istanbul Basaksehir in Turkey. With 22 goals, Onuachu leads the league in scoring, however he was unable to increase his total.

Some Nigerians had to put up with more subdued excursions elsewhere. David Okereke played in Cremonese’s tie with Torino, while Chidozie Awaziem was an unused replacement in Nantes’ 1-1 draw with Brest. Gift Orban’s goal drought now stands at nine games after playing the entire game as Hellas Verona lost 1-0 to AC Milan.
