Serena Williams has sparked rumors that she would return to tennis by saying, “I don’t know,” in response to a question about it. I will simply see what transpires.
The 44-year-old mother of two and 23-time Grand Slam singles champion hasn’t played since losing in the third round of the 2022 US Open.
However, she denied making a comeback after re-entering the tennis anti-doping testing pool in December, igniting rumors.
When asked about the possibility once more on the television program “Today” on Wednesday, she did not disclose any intentions but also did not rule it out.
Williams remarked, “I’m just having fun and enjoying my life right now.”
When asked if that was a yes or no, she said, “That’s not a yes or a no.” I’m just going to see what happens; I have no idea.
Williams said, “Did I re-enter?,” when asked why she had returned to the drug-testing program. I had no idea if I was out. I can’t talk about this, listen.
Venus, Williams’ 45-year-old sister, competed in the current Australian Open in Melbourne after receiving a wildcard and losing in the opening round.
Venus returned to tennis in July after a nearly two-year hiatus, and she also participated in competitions in Hobart and Auckland.
Former world number one Jim Courier, who is currently a broadcaster, observed how difficult it was for competitors to be on the anti-doping testing pool during the Australian Open.
When they are, they must specify where and when they are available to deliver samples.
Before they may resume competing, they must finish testing for six months.
Courier stated, “No one who doesn’t intend to play professional tennis is going to put themselves in that list, especially someone with as much experience as Serena Williams.”
“Serena denied returning in December, but I believe she will play someplace at some point unless she sustains an injury.
“Only she knows if it’s singles, doubles with her sister, or mixed doubles in the US Open.
“But that can’t be interpreted in any other way.”
Together, the Williams sisters won three gold medals in the Olympics and fourteen Grand Slam doubles championships.
