Sunday Ndidi, the father of Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi, passed away in a car accident on Tuesday.
Ndidi, a retired military commander, was reportedly involved in a car accident in Umunede, Delta State, late on Sunday.
After being taken to a hospital in Agbor, Delta State, he was pronounced dead.
Besiktas, Ndidi’s team, confirmed the sad event in a statement sent on Tuesday on their official X account.
The club stated, “We are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic passing of our football player Wilfred Ndidi’s esteemed father, Sunday Ndidi, in a fatal traffic accident.”
“We offer our condolences to our football player Wilfred Ndidi, his family, and loved ones; may Allah grant mercy to the deceased.”
The passing occurred months after Ndidi scored his first goal for the Super Eagles while leading Nigeria to a third-place result in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
The midfielder honored his late father and mentioned how much he admired former Super Eagles captain Kanu Nwankwo while celebrating his headed goal against Tunisia in Nigeria’s second group encounter.
Ndidi told reporters in Morocco, “My dad came up with the celebration because he was always talking about Kanu Nwankwo.”
