After Poland fought back twice to clinch a 2-2 draw against the Super Eagles of Nigeria in an international friendly in Warsaw on Wednesday night, head coach Jan Urban expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance.
Urban claimed his players shown sufficient skill and character against a formidable Super Eagles team, even though they were unable to win at the 58,000-seat Stadion PGE Narodowy.
Urban was quoted by laczynaspilka.pl as stating, “The scenario from the previous matches repeated itself, we played, the opponent scored.”
But since we performed well, I wasn’t worried. After the goal, we performed admirably. Against a strong team, it was a good game.
The coach was happy with Poland’s response after his team overcame two deficits throughout the thrilling match.
Terem Moffi gave Nigeria the lead in the 23rd minute as the visitors took advantage of one of their few open opportunities. Moffi converted from close range.
After creating multiple opportunities, the hosts reacted favorably and tied the score before halftime through Kacper Potuski.
When Paul Onuachu scored a penalty in the 76th minute to give Nigeria the lead again, the Super Eagles appeared certain to win Warsaw.
But Poland would not give up, and deep into stoppage time, defender Przemysław Wiśniewski scored an incredible goal past goalkeeper Maduka Okoye to secure a well-earned equalizer.
Later, WiÅ›niewski maintained that Poland’s performance was reflected in the outcome, especially after creating more opportunities than their rivals.
In comparison to last week’s 2-0 loss to Ukraine, the defender also mentioned a better defensive performance.
Other than scoring, Nigeria had few chances to score in the first half. We carefully examined the game against Ukraine and will attempt to make inferences from Nigeria as well.
After the game, WiÅ›niewski remarked, “We gave up two goals, but overall we were better defensively.”
