Following US strikes, Iran threatens to boycott the 2026 World Cup.

After US airstrikes murdered Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran was able to boycott the World Cup. Bombs were dropped from all sides as the violence between Iran, the United States, and Israel sharply increased on Friday and Saturday.

In a coordinated military operation, Donald Trump and Israel targeted major Iranian cities, including the country’s capital, Tehran. The US President promised to “hit them with a force that has never been seen before!”

The Iranian government fired missiles against targets in neighboring countries, including as Saudi Arabia and Qatar, in retaliation for the strikes. Five of the countries competing in the finals were involved in the battle because British jets were dispatched to defend allies from Iranian artillery.

Three months before Iran is scheduled to compete in the World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, there is a crisis. However, Mehdi Taj, head of the Iranian Football Federation, has seriously questioned the nation’s participation.

“With what happened today and with that attack by the United States, it is unlikely that we can look forward to the cup,” Marca reports he said. “But the sports chiefs are the ones who must decide on that,” he continued. Iran’s first match is scheduled for the morning of June 16 and they have been placed in a group with Egypt, Belgium, and New Zealand.
