Following AFCON disappointment, Burkina Faso names Amir Abdou as their new coach.

Amir Abdou was announced by the Burkina Faso Football Federation as the Stallions’ new head coach, marking what it called a shift into a phase characterized by ambition, structure, and a renewed focus on competition.

The federation described the 53-year-old Franco-Comorian’s selection as the result of a “rigorous examination” process designed to find a candidate who could bring stability and consistency back to the national squad.

Abdou takes over after Brama Traore, whose term ended with Burkina Faso’s early elimination from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, a campaign that provoked reflection inside the federation, according to Naija News.

The announcement was made in a statement that was posted on the Confederation of African Football website on Sunday, March 1, 2026.

The federation emphasized how competitive the selection process was in confirming the ruling.

“Comorian coach Abdou Amir has been formally chosen to take charge of Burkina Faso’s A team after a call for applications and a thorough review of the various profiles,” the federation said.

Abdou’s entrance was characterized by the FBF as a planned start for a team that has long been renowned on the continent but is looking to make a lasting impression in important competitions.

Prior to the 2027 TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, Abdou’s first significant duty will be to stabilize performances.

Additionally, he will be in charge of Burkina Faso’s forthcoming World Cup qualification matches, where it is anticipated that consistency will be crucial.

His impact will be felt immediately, as his first games are slated for the March 2026 international window with unconfirmed opponents.

Abdou brings a reputation built in continental competition to Ouagadougou.

He first gained widespread fame with the Comoros national football team, leading the island nation to its first appearance at the 2021 AFCON knockout rounds. This achievement changed people’s opinions of Comorian football.

Later, he oversaw a historic victory over Algeria at the 2023 AFCON while managing the Mauritania national football team, solidifying his reputation as a technically disciplined organizer.

Before most recently playing for Hassania Agadir in Morocco’s premier flight, Abdou won two Mauritanian league titles with FC Nouadhibou.

Abdou, who is well recognized for creating small defensive units and encouraging teamwork, is anticipated to provide tactical clarity and unity to a Burkina Faso team that combines seasoned internationals with up-and-coming talent.

The continental ancestry of Burkina Faso is still important.

In addition to making it to the AFCON final in 2013, the Stallions also made it to the semifinals in 2017 and 2021. However, calls for structural changes and long-term planning have increased due to recent inconsistencies, which culminated in their early departure at the most recent edition.

Abdou’s appointment is the federation’s wager on his demonstrated continental leadership and ability to handle pressure.

It gives the new coach the chance to lead a country with a well-established history back into serious contention for honors on the African scene.
