With the Premier League championship in jeopardy, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has acknowledged that he will be the “biggest ever” fan of Bournemouth when they meet Manchester City on Tuesday night.
After a tight 1-0 victory over Burnley on Monday night, the Gunners got closer to ending a 22-year wait.
In a tense match that saw Arsenal move five points clear at the top, a header from Kai Havertz in the first half proved crucial.
The festivities would be postponed if City won at Vitality Stadium. Before their season-ending match, anything less would solidify Arsenal’s title.
Arteta did not conceal his allegiances.
“The largest ever!” When asked if he will support the Cherries, Arteta responded.
“I believe that Andoni, the players, and all of the Bournemouth supporters are all [Bournemouth fans] because we understand what it means if they get a result.”
Andoni Iraola, Arteta’s childhood friend, is in charge of Bournemouth, who have won 16 games and are vying for a spot in Europe for the upcoming campaign.
Arsenal’s last game is away at Crystal Palace, although it might not be necessary for them to win the championship. North London would celebrate if Pep Guardiola’s team failed to score as many points as possible on the south coast.
They have led the standings for 556 nights since the start of the 2022–2023 season, more than 200 more than any competition, with Liverpool coming in second with 355.
