Anthony Gordon: The Premier League is more physically demanding than the Champions League

Anthony Gordon, a winger for Newcastle United, has provided an honest analysis of the distinctions between Premier League and Champions League football, asserting that the domestic league has become much more physical and transitional than European competition.

Gordon clarified this during the press conference prior to a crucial away match against Paris Saint-Germain. He claimed that the unrelenting intensity of Premier League games frequently transforms games into physical contests, with set-pieces and duels determining results rather than organized, possession-based football.

“It’s a running game, there isn’t much control, and sometimes it’s about duels: whoever wins the duels wins the game,” he stated.

The 23-year-old winger, on the other hand, said that the Champions League is more open and that clubs play “proper football,” which permits innovation and extended spells of attack. “I believe that teams are considerably more transparent in the Champions League. It’s less transitional; everyone tries to play,” Gordon continued.

He also emphasized how the Premier League has changed to become a faster, more competitive league. “Long throw-ins and set-pieces are becoming more common in the Premier League. He compared some games to a basketball-style endurance test because of their unrelenting speed, saying, “It’s become a lot slower and a lot more set-piece-based, I would say.”

Gordon’s remarks have spurred discussion among supporters and commentators over the current trajectory of English football, with many concurring that in recent seasons, high-intensity, physical fights have frequently replaced tactical control and fluidity.

In the meantime, it’s unclear which of the two clubs—Newcastle and Paris Saint-Germain—will fall out of the top eight (8) competition, with the teams below them—Chelsea, Barcelona, and similar teams—winning their respective ties.
