According to reports, governors in the All Progressives Congress (APC) are at odds over who gets to serve on the National Working Committee (NWC).
The Daily Sun claims that as the APC gets ready for its 2026 National Convention, which is scheduled to take place in Abuja this month, it is rapidly devolving into a fierce war of attrition.
The Progressives Governors’ Forum has convened at least two closed-door sessions in Abuja that concluded without resolutions, according to many top party officials who spoke with the aforementioned media.
According to the sources, there are disputes about who gets to name the candidates within each geopolitical zone and which geopolitical zone receives which NWC office.
“The governors are not at odds over ideology. They are engaged in a power struggle. According to the source, every spot on that NWC is a lever for 2027.
Three NWC positions—the Deputy National Chairman (North), the National Organizing Secretary, the National Publicity Secretary, and the Deputy National Publicity Secretary—were found to be the primary source of contention.
In the lead-up to the 2027 general elections, these offices will be crucial tools for controlling delegate lists, primaries, and media narratives.
According to a top party source, governors elected on the APC Governors’ Forum platform are dissatisfied and many believe that previous statements caught them off guard.
For example, it was discovered that the North West is actively advocating for increased representation in the NWC. The North Central, whose National Chairman at the moment is Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, is adamant on keeping things as they are.
For the 2026 national conference, the APC established its National Central Coordinating Committee. Professor Yilwatda, the APC National Chairman, presided over the inauguration ceremony at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja. He stated at the inauguration that the action demonstrates the party’s dedication to organizational discipline and internal democracy.
The Committee is chaired by former Katsina State Governor Aminu Bello Masari, with former Senate President Anyim Pius Anyim as Vice Chairman I, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State as Vice Chairman II, Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State as Treasurer, and Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State as Secretary. According to a number of sources, at least three of the committee’s governors have divergent views on zoning and have been discreetly advocating from their various regions to remain steadfast until their demands are fulfilled.
