President Bola Tinubu is allegedly mistreating and persecuting former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai over his decision to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC), according to Nollywood actor and politician Kenneth Okonkwo.
Okonkwo made this claim on Friday during an interview on Channels Television’s “The Morning Brief,” according to Naija News.
The ADC chieftain criticized El-Rufai’s detention, emphasizing that the Federal Government lacks the authority to detain anyone for longer than 48 hours.
According to Kenneth Okonkwo, the party is not preventing Tinubu from looking into El-Rufai, but the governor’s basic rights ought to be protected.
“We think that El-Rufai is being mistreated and persecuted because he joined the ADC,” he stated. We are not absolving anyone, but the legal system, not President Tinubu, should make the final decision.
For the time being, he is utilizing his power as Commander-in-Chief to utilize the “anti corruption” instrumentality against the opposition. I’m curious if Tinubu’s government has a commission to combat corruption.
El-Rufai’s release should be President Bola Tinubu’s primary priority. We are not arguing that he shouldn’t be put on trial, but we do believe that his basic human rights should be respected.
A government must hold someone in custody for 48 hours before granting them bail. No, that power is not yours. Additionally, the Supreme Court’s ruling states that you are not allowed to detain someone while feigning an investigation.
“The whole point of an arrest is that you have finished your investigation and determined that the individual in question is guilty of whatever crime you are accusing him of.
“The fact that someone said something does not give you the right to go and arrest someone because in a criminal proceeding, the prosecution’s job is to prove the suspect’s guilt, not the suspect’s to prove his innocence.”
