Ahead of the 2027 general elections, Senator Nenadi Usman, the National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), has stated that she is unsure of the reasons behind the defection of opposition politicians to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and that the trend does not indicate the end of opposition influence.
Usman made the comments in response to recent defections from opposition parties, such as the Labour Party, to the APC in an interview on Politics that was broadcast by TVC News on Sunday.
According to her, the fact that the majority of state governors currently support the ruling party does not imply that opposition parties won’t matter in the upcoming general election.
Speaking about the wave of defections, Usman stated that she was unable to identify a particular cause for the politicians’ shift to the APC.
“You asked me what I believe is driving them to join the APC. To be honest, I have no idea why so many people are joining the APC,” she remarked.
“There is a lot of news out there. We hear tales of individuals who—they claim that joining the APC pardons one’s misdeeds. That might be the case, then. “I’m not sure,” Usman continued.
Usman failed to provide a firm response when asked if the Labour Party could have a candidate capable of taking on the APC in the 2027 presidential election, stating that it was too early to make such a determination.
“We’ll cross that bridge when we reach it. Because I can’t sit down right now and decide whether or not to field a candidate or how to do so,” she stated.
She insisted that opposition groups would continue to be important to Nigeria’s political process in 2027 despite the defections.
