On Friday, the Nigerian military opened a general court-martial to investigate 36 soldiers who were allegedly involved in a coup attempt to topple President Bola Tinubu’s government.
Under strict security, the court-martial, which was established by the Defence Headquarters (DHQ), was opened at the Scorpion Mess in Asokoro, Abuja.
Because of the high-profile nature of the proceedings, journalists—including accredited defense correspondents who had already been invited—were not allowed entry to the venue, therefore the session was held behind closed doors.
The 36 defendants were brought to the mess in an Army Headquarters Garrison bus at around 8:53 a.m., and Naija News learned that security guards also prohibited the use of cell phones to record their arrival. Details will be provided later.
