The nations in Africa having the largest fleets of submarines in 2026

Submarines, which are still essential for maritime security, deterrence, and control over crucial sea lanes, are one way that African nations maintain a strategic presence underwater even though they do not compete with major naval forces.

A number of African nations are making investments to maintain their competencies in this area.

According to Global Firepower, the United States and Russia each have 66 submarines, while China has 61.

Egypt
Egypt has the largest submarine fleet in Africa, with eight of them. Its navy, which is ranked 13th in the world, has four refurbished former Chinese Romeo-class vessels and four new German-built Type 209/1400 diesel-electric submarines. The updated fleet protects the Suez Canal and nearby chokepoints while supporting intelligence, surveillance, and strike operations throughout the Mediterranean and Red Sea. It is outfitted with Western periscopes, passive sonar, and American-made Harpoon missiles.

Algeria

Algeria is rated 16th in the world with six submarines. With two older Kilo 877EKM ships and four newer Russian Project 636 Varshavyanka (Improved Kilo) submarines equipped with mines, torpedoes, and Kalibr cruise missiles, its fleet bolsters offshore energy defense and sea-denial in the western Mediterranean.

South Africa

Three German-built Heroine-class (Type 209/1400) submarines, which are ranked 34th in the world, are operated by South Africa. The fleet, which was put into service between 2005 and 2008, is intended for ISR, anti-submarine warfare, and blue-water patrols. Only one vessel is now in service due to financial and maintenance constraints, but the class is still crucial for keeping an eye on the Cape of Good Hope and maintaining undersea warfare knowledge.
