Muslims are urged by the Sultan to look for the new moon on Tuesday.

To commemorate the start of Ramadan 1447 A.H. on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, Muslims in Nigeria will be looking for the crescent moon, according to the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA). Ramadan is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, if it is spotted; if not, it will begin on Thursday, February 19, 2026.

Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, the secretary-general of the NSCIA, voiced worry in a statement about the difficulties Muslims in Nigeria experience, pointing to “heightened Islamophobic hysteria, insecurity, and perceived media bias against Muslims.”

The statement stated, “The media have consistently failed to uphold the principles of truth, fairness, and objectivity in matters concerning Muslims.”

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was also criticized by the Council for holding elections during Ramadan, stating that it was “not unexpected” and that they would be closely monitoring the situation. The statement said, “We are keeping a close eye on things and anticipate an immediate review.”

Citing the Quran, “Inna ma’al ‘usri yusra” (“Verily, with hardship comes ease”), the NSCIA advised Muslims to stay steadfast in their religion.

“Allah wants you to have ease, not hardship, so that you can finish the time allotted and praise Allah for leading you; maybe you’ll be thankful for that.” Al-Baqarah 2:185, Q.

Ramadan is a time for Muslims to think, confess their sins, and ask for forgiveness.
