INEC Commissioner: Adding More Technology to Transmit Results Will Make Our Issues Worse

According to Muhammad Haruna, a National Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), technology won’t be able to completely solve the problems that arise during elections.

He claimed that there will always be issues with employing technology for elections in an appearance on Trust TV on Monday.

He was responding to President Bola Tinubu’s and the National Assembly’s recent signing of the Electoral Amendment Act.

Haruna maintained that in order to solve current issues, technology must be implemented gradually.

“There will always be glitches,” the INEC National Commissioner said. It is imperative that technology be implemented gradually, particularly in light of current infrastructure issues.

There is a misconception that technology provides a problem-free, all-encompassing answer. Simple polling unit results are already tough for us to send.

“These issues would only be made worse by adding more technological layers, such as combining all polling unit data for transmission at the ward level.”

In the meantime, Chidi Odinkalu, the former chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, has stated that no one can rely on Joash Amupitan, the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to hold credible elections in 2027 given the alarming evidence and shortcomings in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) elections.

According to Naija News, Odinkalu called INEC’s performance a failure in an interview on Channels Television’s “Politics Today.”

Odinkalu contended that inadequate electoral management and a lack of will were the main causes of the flaws rather than legislative restrictions.

Odinkalu cautioned that the concerns identified raise questions about the commission’s readiness for future polls, even though he described the FCT poll as a “small election.”

“INEC failed,” he said. Amupitan’s INEC was a complete failure. And based on this information, no one can rely on Josh to conduct legitimate elections in 2027. Alright, there’s nothing more to it.

“No, the law is not at issue. It has to do with willpower failure. The electoral administration has failed. And no, I’m not far from depicting Nigeria’s elections in a negative light. In actuality, the picture is anything from depressing. It is imperative that the election administrators complete their assignments; if they are unwilling to do so, they should leave immediately.

However, the logistics of the election were subpar. Second, the electoral regulations were poorly administered.

“With just a few hours before elections, you moved them to various polling places and electoral units. Nothing in terms of education, funding for voter education, or information management.

“The brutality was intolerable at number three. Four findings were clearly altered in several locations. On that day, Collation had a bug. This is in the Federal Capital Territory during a minor election. There is shame in this. Joash was unsuccessful.
