The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has come under fire from Senator Adams Oshiomhole, who represents Edo North in the National Assembly, for seeming to apologize for the shooting of criminals comment.
According to Naija News, the Nigeria Police Force has clarified that the IGP did not issue a “shoot-on-sight” order, stating instead that he was referring to Force Order 237, which regulates the operational and legal requirements for police officers to deploy guns.
According to the security officer, Disu informed stakeholders that police had been informed on the order’s provisions and were aware of the situations in which firearms could be used in accordance with existing Rules of Engagement.
Oshiomhole, however, stressed that security personnel should shoot armed criminals without hesitation in an interview with TVC News.
The member from Edo North questioned the IGP’s apology for the comment.
“That’s why when this IG was saying he didn’t say “shoot at sight,” he said. Why is he apologizing?” Take aim at what you see. Shoot on sight if you spot a criminal.
Oshiomole also praised the Department of State Services (DSS) for challenging a court ruling that sentenced convicted criminals to life in prison rather than death.
“I have said that judges should implement the law, not their personal sentiment,” he continued. Additionally, I’m pleased that the DSS is carrying out its duties.
“They have appealed the ruling that sentenced those who ought to have been executed to life in prison.”
