To strengthen the battle against corruption and uphold moral principles in Nigeria’s legal profession, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offenses Commission and the Nigerian Bar Association Anti-Corruption Committee signed a strategic alliance on Thursday.
A Memorandum of Understanding was signed at the ICPC offices in Abuja, formalizing the partnership and reaffirming both organizations’ commitment to upholding integrity, accountability, and the rule of law.
The Anti-Corruption Academy of Nigeria, the ICPC’s training and research division, and the NBA-ACC also signed a second Memorandum of Understanding with the goal of enhancing institutional and human capacity via professional development, education, and research.
ICPC Chairman Dr. Musa Aliyu, SAN, spoke at the event and characterized the collaboration as a purposeful reaction to the pressing need for coordinated action against corruption.
According to Aliyu, “integrity flourishes where partnerships are forged; corruption thrives where institutions work in isolation.” The agreement is a strategic alliance based on common ideals of professionalism, accountability, and service to the Nigerian people.
He emphasized that the cooperation between the ICPC and the NBA is essential to bolstering the legal system and rebuilding public trust in governance, explaining that the MoU offers a framework for coordinating enforcement with prevention, capacity building, public enlightenment, and ethical reorientation.
Aliyu also emphasized the importance of ACAN, stating that training and skill development are crucial to creating a new generation of lawyers who value integrity above all else.
Professor Babafemi A. Badejo, the chairman of the NBA Anti-Corruption Committee, stated that the agreements were a significant step in strengthening institutions and solidifying professional ethics.
He claims that while the ACAN partnership will concentrate on organized anti-corruption training, collaborative research, and specialized certification programs, the MoU with the ICPC will drive collaboration in promoting ethical conduct within the legal profession, enhancing capacity, raising public awareness, and advocating policy reforms.
Both organizations expressed optimism that the partnership would result in quantifiable advancements in Nigeria’s legal and governance systems’ accountability, transparency, and rule of law.
