Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the director-general of the World Trade Organization, has alerted Nigerians to a phony AI-manipulated film that is making the rounds online and asked them to be on guard and not fall for it.
Okonjo-Iweala emphasized in a public advisory that the video, which improperly uses her likeness, is not real and is being investigated by the appropriate authorities.
I am merely warning Nigerians. Another phony video that was altered by AI. Authorities are addressing the situation. I just wanted to let you know about this.
She reaffirmed that she does not have accounts on well-known social media sites like Facebook, Instagram, or WhatsApp, emphasizing that any content that appears there under her name is fake.
As I’ve stated time and time again, I never publish anything on Facebook, Instagram, or WhatsApp. Anything that has my image coming from these sources is not from me. Only Twitter/X is where I post. Simply put, I don’t want anyone to be tricked.
Okonjo-Iweala’s warning coincides with rising worries about deepfake videos and impersonation frauds that utilize artificial intelligence to target innocent citizens and prominent personalities.
