Electoral Act: Sen. Akpoti-Uduaghan: Nigeria deserves elections that foster confidence

By Abuja’s John Alechenu

Nigerians want elections that inspire faith, fortify our unity, and reflect the will of the people, according to Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (PDP, Kogi Central), ahead of the Senate’s pivotal session on Electoral Act revisions.

Early on Tuesday morning, she made this statement in a post on her Facebook page.

“I bring with me the aspirations and expectations of millions of Nigerians who long for more robust democratic protections enshrined in our laws as I enter the Senate chamber today,” Akpoti-Udughan stated.

In order to increase transparency, uphold the integrity of the people’s mandate, and rebuild public trust in our electoral process, real-time electronic transmission of election results is essential.

“Systems that guarantee every vote counts and every voice is fairly represented must be implemented as our democracy develops further.

“Nigeria deserves elections that reflect the true will of the people, foster unity, and inspire trust.”

Nationwide, there is a great deal of public discussion about whether or not to incorporate “real time” into the electronic transmission of election results.

The Senate’s decision to eliminate the “Real Time” transfer from the change made to Section 60(3) of the Electoral Act change Bill prompted a number of civil society organizations to demonstrate in the streets.
