
According to Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital in Lagos, the inquiry into the death of 21-month-old Nkanu Adichie-Esege did not adhere to certain established procedures and norms.
Nkanu, the son of Dr. Ivara Esege and well-known Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, passed away on January 7, 2026, following treatment at Atlantis Hospital and surgery at Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital in Lagos.
According to Naija News, the Medical and Dental Practitioners Investigation Panel suspended the Medical Director of Euracare and two other individuals on Tuesday.
However, according to Euracare, information pertaining to patient and institutional confidentiality appears to have been given outside of the proper channels during the investigation.
In a statement provided to reporters, Euracare stated that since the beginning of this issue, it has carried out an extensive internal review of the clinical events in question, in accordance with its clinical governance standards and best practices, in the interest of transparency. It further stated that the hospital has actively demonstrated its commitment to transparency and will continue to engage openly with all inquiries directed at it.
Two of its clinical team members, Drs. Tosin Majekodunmi and Titus Ogundare, are seasoned experts with extensive patient care records in Nigeria, according to Euracare, which expressed trust in their expertise and honesty.
It further stated that both physicians have made significant contributions throughout their careers to the provision of high-quality healthcare to Nigerian patients at a level on par with the top medical facilities worldwide.
It emphasized that all parties involved, including the organization and its employees, have a right to an unbiased, rigorous, and rule-abiding procedure.
The management of the hospital will bring up these issues through the proper legal and regulatory procedures, it continued.
