Bauchi Youth Leader: Alleged coup plotters acting selfishly

Written by Charly Agwam

Khamis Musa Darazo, the leader of Bauchi Youth Watch, has denounced purported moves to weaken President Bola Tinubu’s government, characterizing them as self-serving and harmful to Nigeria’s democratic stability.

Darazo, who claimed to be a supporter of President Tinubu, claimed that any attempt to overthrow an elected government by non-democratic means would be a betrayal of the mandate that Nigerians voluntarily granted by voting.

Speaking with Vanguard on Friday, he denounced what he termed as political machinations aimed at destabilising the administration, stressing that such activities weaken public trust in democracy.

He contends that while democracy allows for dissent and constructive criticism, it does not excuse attempts to undermine constitutional order.

Democracy permits dissent and criticism, but it forbids plots aimed at undermining the will of the people. The full force of the law should be used to anyone found guilty of conspiring against a constitutionally elected government, according to Darazo.

He emphasized that President Tinubu should be allowed the political room to carry out changes that would strengthen institutions, stabilize the economy, and foster national cohesion.

According to Darazo, early power battles undermine public trust in democratic procedures and divert attention from governance.

In addition, he advised political leaders to put issue-based involvement first and back programs that advance national development rather than taking steps that would widen political gaps out of self-interest.

“Nigerians are keeping a close eye on things.” Those who prioritize their own goals over the interests of the country as a whole will be judged by history, he declared.

Darazo emphasized that respect for democratic institutions and the rule of law is the only way to achieve sustained growth and urged individuals, especially young people, to stay watchful and oppose narratives that could destabilize the nation.
