The failed expansion joint on the Kara Bridge, which extends beyond Lagos along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, will soon be rebuilt by the Federal Government.
According to Naija News, the repairs are planned to start today, Tuesday, July 28, 2026, and run for two weeks.
This was revealed by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in a statement signed by SRC Elizabeth Jayeola, the Sector Public Education Officer for the Lagos Sector Command.
According to the FRSC, the renovation was required to fix the broken expansion joint and enhance driver safety on the crowded Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The FRSC cited Corps Commander Kehinde Hamzat, the Lagos Sector Commander, as saying that the repair was a crucial safety measure meant to prevent collisions, safeguard the bridge, and guarantee safer travel for drivers.
The organization did, however, issue a warning that the construction would result in traffic jams along the Lagos-Ibadan corridor.
In order to give the construction crew a safe working environment, Hamzat clarified that the current four-lane highway would be temporarily reduced to two lanes over a 1.5-kilometer stretch.
He stated that more traffic and delays will unavoidably result from the fewer lanes available, especially during rush hours.
FRSC Encourages Employees to Work From Home
The Sector Commander urged organizations, institutions, and companies that offer remote work to allow their staff to work from home during the two-week construction period in order to minimize the number of vehicles on the impacted corridor.
He said that the action will lessen traffic and ease the strain on the impacted road.
Additionally, he claimed that it would spare passengers from needless delays and the anxiety that comes with standing in traffic for extended periods of time.
The FRSC advised drivers to schedule their trips in advance and, if at all possible, steer clear of busy times.
Additionally, drivers were encouraged to think about other routes, such as the Lekki-Epe and Ikorodu-Sagamu Expressways.
During the building phase, Hamzat urged drivers to exercise patience and caution.
Additionally, he advised people to follow all traffic advisories and the directives of the traffic officers stationed along the corridor.
FRSC Issues a Warning About One-Way Driving
The Sector Commander issued a warning to drivers not to drive against traffic, also referred to as one-way driving, or to disobey traffic control procedures designed to regulate vehicle flow.
According to him, violators would be detained and punished in accordance with the National Road Traffic Regulations.
The Lagos Sector Command has sent sufficient people and operational resources to the impacted corridor, according to the FRSC, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Works, the Ogun State Ministry of Transportation, traffic management organizations, and other emergency responders.
The government claims that the deployment is intended to lessen the effects of the construction activity, enhance traffic flow, and safeguard both drivers and construction personnel.
During the reconstruction, the Command urged drivers to be patient, understanding, and cooperative.
According to the FRSC, the project’s short-term disruption was required to guarantee the construction of a more secure and long-lasting Kara-Opic Bridge for the benefit of drivers and other road users.
Throughout the course of the repairs, it advised commuters to prepare ahead of time, adhere to traffic regulations, and assist traffic control staff.
