ADC expresses concern over the Supreme Court’s delayed ruling, saying that we might not be able to take part in the 2027 election.

In a letter to Nigeria’s Chief Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) requested a prompt ruling from the Supreme Court about the party’s ongoing leadership struggle.

According to Naija News, attorneys for the group associated with former Senate President David Mark made the request in a letter dated April 28, 2026. According to the legal team, the party’s prospects of participating in the 2027 general elections may be impacted by the judgment’s postponement.

On April 22, 2026, the Supreme Court heard the case; however, it did not provide a deadline for its ruling. A five-member panel headed by Justice Mohammed Garba is handling the case in response to petitions contesting previous decisions made by subordinate courts regarding the party’s leadership issue.

The party’s attorneys clarified in the letter addressed to the Chief Justice that, despite the ADC’s continued registration as a political party, the electoral body’s actions, which were based on a prior court decision, have left it without a recognized leadership for the time being.

They cautioned that the party might not be able to fulfill the requirements needed to take part in the elections if the Supreme Court does not render a decision quickly.

“The ADC faces the serious and irrevocable risk of being barred from taking part in the 2027 General Elections if the verdict is not delivered within the next three days from the date of this letter. Millions of Nigerians who support the ADC’s objectives would be deprived of their constitutional right to freely associate and run for office through the political party of their choice.

My Lord, we are aware of this Honorable Court’s great workload and duties. We also understand that in this unique situation, delaying justice would equate to denying justice.

The letter stated, in part, that “the entire political future of our client and the legitimate expectations of its members nationwide now hang in the balance.”
