Yvonne Jegede, a Nigerian actress, has promised to give up national activism.
According to Naija News, the actress was responding to criticism she received online for her remarks against systemic political corruption.
She had challenged the structural problem of double taxation, in which public monies are purportedly siphoned to political elites while citizens are compelled to pay for their own basic infrastructure despite doing their civic duties.
Therefore, individuals should assist the government in improving the lives of the general public after working hard to earn their income and paying their taxes. However, certain family members are the intended recipients of the tax collected. “My mental health has been stretched to its limits by this country,” she said at first.
However, her remark elicited conflicting responses.
In response, Jegede said that Nigerians are “not worth fighting for.”
She claimed that people who criticize governance shortcomings are frequently met with hostility by the populace.
“People drag me more and more when I talk about the unusual things I witness in my nation. I can see why individuals remain silent during emergencies. She continued, “You see, Nigerians aren’t worth fighting for because bigotry is the other of the day. I wasn’t born to look the other way when humanity is being trampled upon.”
