After losing at the Grammy Awards for the second time, Nigerian artist David Adeleke, better known by his stage name Davido, recounted the consoling words his wife, Chioma Rowland Adeleke, gave him.
Although it was nominated for Best African Music Performance, Davido’s song “With You,” which featured Omah Lay, did not win. Tyla, a South African celebrity, won the prize for her song Push 2 Start.
Burna Boy (Love), Davido (With You featuring Omah Lay), and a joint effort by Ayra Starr and Wizkid (Gimme Dat) were among the many Nigerian artists that were well-represented in the category.
Eddy Kenzo and Mehran Matin’s Hope & Love was also nominated. Nigerians made up a large portion of the nominations, however none of them won the prize.
Davido revealed on Instagram that he told his wife there was no need to go to the after-party following the defeat.
Chioma, however, urged him to do otherwise. “I said baby listen, we lost again, let’s not go!” the singer wrote, posting pictures from their outing. “Be humble in victory and gracious in defeat,” she said. We’re outside.
