Last weekend, Nigerian football players were at the center of pivotal moments throughout Europe and beyond, influencing outcomes from England to the United States with goals, assists, and game-winning cameos.
Alex Iwobi scored in Fulham’s 2-1 Premier League victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Craven Cottage when it meant most.
After a tidy exchange with Harry Wilson, the midfielder scored just before halftime, firing a crisp attempt off the far post. It turned out to be the winner and made Spurs’ defensive problems worse. His season total of seven goals and three assists came from the goal, which was his fourth league goal.
Additionally, Iwobi created four opportunities, more than any other player on the field. After scoring and providing an assist in the previous 3-1 victory over Sunderland, he has now scored in back-to-back games.
Samuel Chukwueze entered the game late to help finish it, and Calvin Bassey contributed to a well-organized defensive performance.
Ola Aina and Taiwo Awoniyi had yet another challenging afternoon at Nottingham Forest as the team lost for the third time in a row.
Aina delivered three accurate long balls and finished 28 of 29 passes, including a perfect 14 of 14 in the opponent half. Awoniyi, who is still getting back to his best, entered the game late and scored one goal without causing any problems for the goalie.
Forest is still only two points above the drop zone in 17th place.
Chidera Ejuke and Akor Adams made appearances in La Liga as Sevilla overcame a two-goal deficit to draw 2-2 with Real Betis in the Seville derby.
Ejuke injected urgency after entering the game at halftime with Sevilla down, while Adams started but was unable to break his goal drought. A point was saved by late goals from Isaac Romero and Alexis Sanchez.
In Valencia’s 1-0 victory over Osasuna, Umar Sadiq started. In a diligent performance, he won a penalty, finished all 11 of his passes, and fought through 11 duels even if he did not score.
In a 3-1 victory over Alanyaspor in Turkey, Victor Osimhen was once again crucial for Galatasaray.
He helped his team score their second goal and then took advantage of a defensive blunder to seal the win late in the game. With four assists in his last four league games, the forward now has ten league goals.
As Rizespor defeated Kasimpasa 3-0, Ibrahim Olawoyin also recorded his first assist of the year.
