The World Cup legacy of Enyeama continues to set the bar for African goalkeepers.

The achievements of former Nigerian captain Vincent Enyeama continue to set the standard for African goalkeepers on the grandest stage of football as goalkeepers continue to steal the show in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Eloy Room’s performance was the most dramatic of the tournament’s many notable performances thus far. In Curaçao’s goalless draw with Ecuador, the 37-year-old goalie made 15 stops to help his nation earn their first-ever World Cup point.

Room received a lot of accolades for the accomplishment, which eclipsed the previous regulation-time record of 13 saves established by Peru goalkeeper Ramón Quiroga against the Netherlands in 1978.

Even though Room’s accomplishment made history, Enyeama’s standing as Africa’s most significant World Cup custodian has not diminished. Richard Kingson of Ghana, who made nine saves against the Czech Republic in 2006, continues to hold the continent’s single-match World Cup save record.

Few African goalkeepers, meanwhile, have been as consistent across several competitions as Enyeama.

During Nigeria’s opening encounter against Argentina at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, the former Hapoel Tel Aviv and Lille goalkeeper put on one of the most spectacular individual displays in the competition’s history.

Enyeama made six stops, four of which stopped Lionel Messi, the current World Player of the Year, despite the Super Eagles’ 1-0 loss to a header from Gabriel Heinze.

His performance included a late close-range block that stopped Messi from scoring and a fingertip stop on a curling effort. Despite being on the losing team, Enyeama was voted Man of the Match, making history as the first and only African goalie to win the title at a World Cup following a loss. Diego Maradona, the coach of Argentina, later said that Enyeama was the primary reason Messi was unable to score.

Four years later, in Brazil, the Nigerian upheld similar standards, making 21 saves in four games as Nigeria advanced to the round of 16. His exploits against Argentina, France, Iran, and Bosnia-Herzegovina were essential to the Super Eagles’ advancement. Only Kingson’s 22 saves at the 2010 World Cup surpasses Enyeama’s total in a single competition among African goalkeepers.

While other African greats like Tony Sylva, Thomas N’Kono, and Yassine Bounou have all made an impact on the game, Enyeama’s two World Cup performances still stand out.

New goalkeeping heroes have also been added to the 2026 version. During his nation’s World Cup debut, veteran Josimar Dias, also known as Vozinha, of Cape Verde, made seven saves in a 0-0 tie against Spain.

After a dominant performance that swiftly made him a social media phenomenon, the 40-year-old was crowned Man of the Match and became the oldest goalie to participate in a country’s inaugural World Cup match.

Matt Freese of the United States has also shown himself to be a dependable presence in between the posts. In both group-stage games, including the 2-0 victory against Australia that guaranteed American advancement to the round of 32, the New York City FC goalie has kept clean sheets.

Emiliano Martínez and Unai Simón are leading the candidates in the Golden Glove race, which is also picking up speed. As the knockout stages draw near, Mike Maignan and Alisson Becker are still very much in the running.
