The NPFL has set August as the start date for the 2026–2027 season.

Following a joint stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja that included the National Sports Commission, the Nigeria Football Federation, the NPFL, and club owners, the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) scheduled the start of the 2026–2027 season for the weekend of August 27–29.

The next NPFL season will run through May 28, 2027, according to the authorized football schedule. In an effort to provide a more structured and predictable domestic football schedule, the schedule also includes games for the President Federation Cup.

According to Naija News, Nigerian club football will also reach a financial milestone in the upcoming season. The league winners will get a record ₦1 billion in prize money, the largest title award in the history of the nation’s elite league, according to National Sports Commission chairman Shehu Dikko.

The larger prize pool is a component of broader changes intended to boost the NPFL’s commercial appeal, enhance competition, and draw new capital to the local sport.

After being promoted from the Nigeria National League, four clubs will either make their debut or return to the top division. Sporting Lagos, Inter Lagos, Ranchers Bees, and Doma United, who were promoted at the end of the 2025–26 season, will take the position of the four demoted teams.

The Enugu Rangers, who won their eighth NPFL championship after leading the standings at the end of the 2025–2026 season, will be their opponent.
