Luis García Plaza Joins Ejuke and Akor Adams as Sevilla’s New Coach

After firing Matías Almeyda, Sevilla resorted to Luis García Plaza in an attempt to stabilize their season, giving the seasoned coach a contract through 2027.

Less than a day after Almeyda’s departure, the La Liga team announced the change on Tuesday. The decision comes after a challenging run that has sent the team close to the bottom of the table.

According to a release from the club, “Sevilla FC has reached an agreement with Madrid-born coach Luis García Plaza (01/12/1972), who will take charge of the first team until 2027.”

As Sevilla fights to avoid relegation, the appointment marks a new beginning for Nigerian duo Chidera Ejuke and Akor Adams.

Plaza, 53, has a strong background in Spanish football. He started out as a coach at Unión Deportiva Altea and has since established a reputation in the top division, managing teams like Levante, Getafe, and Villarreal.

Before leaving in December 2024, he led Deportivo Alavés back to La Liga and guaranteed their survival during his most recent tenure.

It has been difficult to overlook Sevilla’s difficulties. They are barely above the relegation zone this season, with just three points separating them from the bottom three after finishing 17th previous season.

After a 2-0 loss to Valencia increased the club’s worries, Almeyda—who managed 32 games in all competitions—paid the price.

Now that Plaza is in control of a team looking for consistency and outcomes, Sevilla is hoping that his background will stop the decline and bring some stability back to a tumultuous campaign.
