Hugo Broos, the coach of South Africa, claims that after Bafana Bafana made it to the World Cup knockout stage for the first time in their history, his players silenced their detractors.
South Africa finished second in Group A behind co-hosts Mexico, who won all three group games, after defeating South Korea 1-0 on Wednesday, according to Naija News.
After losing 2-0 to Mexico in their opening match, the African team, making their fourth World Cup appearance, was written off.
But they bounced back with a draw against the Czech Republic before defeating South Korea in Monterrey thanks to a goal from Thapelo Maseko in the second half.
“I think we gave an answer to all those big mouths of the last weeks who thought we had to change something, and I’m very proud of my team’s performance,” Broos remarked.
“We simply carried out our actions. This is the outcome of simply doing what I wanted to accomplish.
The 74-year-old Broos, who has been South Africa’s coach since 2021, called the accomplishment “emotional,” pointing out that his career was coming to a close.
“I’ve already stated that it will likely be one of my final games, and when you can end a career like I had in this way, I think everyone or every coach dreams of it,” he remarked.
Despite criticism, the Belgian stated he always had faith in the team.
“There may be a difference between them as players and me as a coach; I’m the coach, but I’m not a coach,” he remarked.
“I believe they consider me a buddy. Thus, I have a really positive relationship with the players.
A spot in the round of 16 is up for grabs as South Africa takes on co-hosts Canada in Los Angeles on Sunday.
Broos remarked, “I just know that the players will be ready again and try to achieve the third round.”
It need to be considerably more significant. However, those players are pursuing those objectives. These athletes aim to demonstrate to everyone that they are a strong squad. So, we’ll see if we can continue on Sunday of next week.
